STEP into Sustainability

This article is of interest to me because it shows that sustainable development is becoming today a key concern for all consumers and in particular in the hospitality sector.
Everybody wants to consume better today. This is very true in the hotel business. The guests don’t only look at attractive pricing and convenience anymore. They want to make sure that every service provider, including hotels, is also acting responsibly towards the environment.
During a recent meeting at Cornell’s University in New York, more than 25 hotel industry leaders gathered for a Sustainability Roundtable to discuss the actions that contribute to improve sustainability in the accommodation sector, both from a hotel and a guest point of view.
The traditional obsession of companies to make profit at all costs is giving way progressively to include other parameters such as protection of the environment and the people. New obligation of performance on the triple bottom line, the 3Ps (profit, planet, people), is changing the way companies operate nowadays, forcing them to integrate those concepts in their strategies.
No corporate strategy can therefore be put in place today without taking into account sustainable development. The challenge is then to implement these sustainable policies and procedures into daily operations.
It's true that nowadays, every hotel chain has to align with their competitors, so they all have their "Green Program". But I think we should wait to see the results in the long-run, because for some hotels, it could only be a temporary marketing tool..
RépondreSupprimerI agree with you Gabrielle about the temporary marketing tool fact. However, if hotels use sustainability only as a marketing tool, the main question will be : "Will customers still have confidence in them?"
RépondreSupprimerAnd the fact that the importance of environment and green programs are more and more present in people's mind might change hotels' perception.
I think that susatinability is really important for the big hotel industry leaders, but I think many small hotels and many private owned hotels don't take care of sustainability because they don't have the money to invest in new technologies or expensive sutainabel products.
